Scrivener 2 is an application designed for the Mac (although it is available on Windows and iOS) by Literature and Latte for the purpose of writing and organizing large manuscripts, something you’re going to need if your book is anything longer than a short story. If you want to know why you should update, check out my newer review of Scrivener 3! It fixes most of the issues that Scrivener 2 had. Scrivener has updated and become Scrivener 3 now. Granted, countless masterpieces have been penned by all three of these tools, but countless masterpieces were painted with white lead before there was a non-toxic alternative. Most writers, wholly unaware of Scrivener, write their stories using an application called Microsoft Word, which is only slightly more efficient than using a typewriter, which is only slightly more efficient than writing the whole book by hand. To put it simply, Scrivener 2 is the app that all writers desperately need. Still, not enough people know this app exists, so if I can make even a few people aware it’ll be worth it.

This will set you back $45 for a single license for Mac or Windows with a free trial option.I don’t know if I can offer Scrivener 2 any praise that’s not already been said, and even as I write this I’m terrified of simply regurgitating what many, many others have written on the subject. It does take some time to fully understand it’s functionality (and features), but is worth the time if you need a higher level of organization. You can view your main document, research elements and comments (and other features) all at the same time instead of opening several different documents and flipping between them. If you’re looking to get extremely organized with your writing, this option is worth considering. Not cloud-based (although if you have the app on different devices, you can access your project wherever you are).Several pre-made writing templates for all disciplines (fiction, non-fiction, scriptwriting, etc.).

It is internet-based (with an offline mode) so you have less to worry about in terms of saving, but have that ease of access anywhere. It’s constantly adding more features (which are crowdsourced by users), which means it’s getting more robust all of the time. If you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated than Word or Docs, then Novlr might be right up your alley.

  • Largely internet-based, although you can still access without an internet connection.

It’s easy to collaborate using Google Docs and allows the flexibility to download in most document types you’d need. If you’re looking for a cheaper version of Microsoft Word (read: Free) then this might be a great option for you.

  • Largely internet based, although you can still access without an internet connection.
  • Downloads into various document types (.docx.
  • Google Docs are basically Google’s version of Microsoft Word. Options range from $69/year to a one-time of $149.99. Unless you tote around an old CD version of Word, you’ll need to pay to use Office 365. It’s exactly what you need if you’re writing less organization-heavy projects, like perhaps poetry, essays, blog posts, etc. Word is the first option most writers use.
  • Editing options (comments, track changes, etc.).
  • It’s your most basic option for capturing your words, and is something most writers have access to. For those new to the game and unfamiliar with some of the niche software options, this will hopefully give you a good overview of your options: Microsoft Word There are so many novel writing software options out there for us to use for our projects.
